You will have a volunteer manager who will support you in your role We will reimburse out of pocket expenses if agreed before you start your role You will gain some bike maintenance skills over time You must be confident safely using basic tools ![]() You must have some familiarity with bikes, for example knowing the parts of a bike You need to be comfortable working in a professional team environment You do not need to be a fully experienced bike mechanic, but you do need to be able to work independently as our mechanics can get very busy Stripping down bikes and recovering parts that can be sold or reusedĪssisting with shop tasks like organising our store of donated bikes or cleaningĪfter a period of volunteering and with the agreement of the Workshop Manager, you can begin to restore donated bikes for sale. Our volunteers help recover parts that can be resold from donated bikes helping to generate extra income and reduce waste. They also run Build-a-Bike workshops to enable people with a history of homelessness, offending, substance misuse or long-term employment to gain confidence and learn new skills. The workshops generate income through the refurbishment and sale of bikes and bike parts, and through services such as repair work delivered by teams of trained and professional bike mechanics. A bike is so much more than a leisure activity, it can boost people’s physical and mental well-being and also provides a means for people to travel and get out and about." Sarah Durrans, Regional operations director at Aster Group, said: “We thought it would be great if the bikes could be gifted to people that might not otherwise be able to afford to buy a new bike. ![]() ![]() The bikes donated by Aster will be refurbished by volunteers and sold in Julian House charity shops to raise money for the charity. The bike workshops started over 10 years ago in Bath as part of the charity’s meaningful occupation programme. Julian House supports vulnerable and at-risk people including adults and young people experiencing homelessness, escaping domestic abuse, adults with learning difficulties and people who need support after leaving prison.Įvery year the charity helps over 1,800 vulnerable people take part in a range of workshops including bike maintenance and refurbishment, as well as sports and cookery classes. While tidying the estates, the housing association saved 33 bikes from going to landfill and instead donated the haul to Julian House. The bikes were picked up from several housing estates managed by Aster across Wiltshire where they’d been left by previous owners and were no longer being used. Housing association Aster Group has donated over 30 abandoned bikes to local charity, Julian House to help vulnerable people gain new skills through bike refurbishment workshops and raise essential funds. ![]()
